Single Parents: Dating Tips Everyone Needs to Know

As I know well, dating as a single parent can be a taxing, disappointing and frustrating experience. But it doesn’t have to be, if you know how to approach the situation. Before I go further, let me clarify a couple of things: First, there are two types of dating single parents and your classification depends upon your child(ren)’s age(s)

If you have adult children, you are what I call a “SPuA”-a single parent, unattached. This by no means implies that you should no longer consider your children in your choice of romantic partners, but they are not as affected as younger children who may have to live with the person you date and/or marry.

For all you SPuAs, my dating tips follow the acronym: SINGLE

Stay focused on your relationship goals. Consider what you want out of the relationship. Marriage or just fun? And proceed accordingly.

Investigate your date. Ask yourself, do I and the other person have similar interests and goals? If yes, proceed; if no, move on.

Never underestimate your friends. Everything you are looking for in a mate might be found in one of your good friends, so don’t rule them out.

Give your family’s input credence. Ask your family what they think of your mate. Their opinions can save you handfuls of heartache or confirm your own feelings of attachment.

Loosen up, enjoy yourself

Evaluate all factors. Long distances, for instance, can hurt a relationship. Consider such factors before getting in too deep.

The second type of parent is a SPA-a single parent, attached. This is your classification if you have children, especially young children, who live in your home.

Save the introductions for later. Don’t introduce your kids to your potential mate until things get serious.

Investigate your date. A background check always helps.

Never neglect your kids for your date. This one’s self-explanatory.

Give your relationship time to progress; don’t rush things

Listen to your kids. Children have a way of weeding out losers, so listen to them.

Evaluate the other person’s goals. Make sure you’re compatible.

With these tips, go forth and date!
