Good etiquette on your first date.
OK, so you have scored yourself a date with the woman of your dreams, but how do you make sure your first date goes well? Remember you only have one chance to make a first impression and of course you want it it be a good one, and a memorable one but in a good way, not one of those dates from hell she will be telling her girlfriends about for years to come.
A dinner date is ideal for your first date. Pick a nice restaurant beforehand and make a reservation. You don’t want the embarrassment of rolling up and being turned away because they are full. Choose one that is not over the top financial wise as you don’t want to build her future expectations too high, but of course best to give MacDonalds a miss no matter how good that special deal is at the moment!
Dress smart but not over the top, appropriate for the occasion and the restaurant you have chosen. The restaurant may have a dress code so check when booking. Of course shower, shave and use deodorant and mouthwash if necessary after cleaning your teeth. We all know the stuff. Just do it.
Make sure they seat you at a good table and not in the path to the bathroom or by the noisy kitchen etc.
Place the napkin on your lap. Never use it like a bib or tuck it in your belt.
Now just because you are paying for it don’t be too eager to get your monies worth. You don’t want to be finished well before your date so pace yourself intermingled with good quality conversation.
Don’t drink too much and make a dick of yourself. Order a bottle of wine and share even if you prefer a beer. Let the wine waiter recommend unless you know what you are talking about…and if you do know a lot about wines don’t be a pretentious git.
Chew with your mouth closed. Finish your mouthful before talking. Don’t slurp the soup. Don’t belch at the end or fart at the table…yeah yeah we all know that I am sure.
Tip appropriately. You don’t want to come off looking like a skinflint. These impressions count so tip fairly. Calculate it in your head. Its not a good look to get out your phone and use the calculator function, or worse still a pen from your pocket protector. 15% is easy to calculate. 10 per cent is just moving the decimal place one back and whatever that result it add half of that again. If in doubt go over rather than under unless the service is shit of course.
Your first date should be fun.
Relax and be yourself (but on your best behavior, you are not out with your mates remember). You should have a good time and look like you are having a good time. She will be nervous too, so relax and let things flow and enjoy it. Remember she may be nothing like you imagined and you won’t want another, but if you have chosen wisely then you will be wanting more so you need to have made a good impression on her to make her want to do it again…and soon.
