First Meeting-contd

Following on from last week.

OK, so you have arrived in Ukraine and have made a time and a place for your very first date.  What to talk about? …what not to talk about? but first just to be perfectly clear following on from last week. Your first date must just not be a coffee for the reasons already mentioned. We have already suggested a meal at your date’s favourite restuarant. You don’t need to worry that she will choose the most expensive restuarant in the whole city. She will have chosen a restuarant she has been to before that has a nice ambience and one which will show off her culture and authenic Ukrainain food of which she is very keen and proud of. Don’t worry, Ukrainian food is great.

If language is a problem, you will have already arranged a translator, but if you have been corresponding without the need for a translator you may be OK. You will have already checked this out with your agency who are only too keen to insist that you need one, or would be better to have one. To be fair, they are probably right for this first meeting, but don’t be bullied into it if you have been conversing on skype reasonably comfortably before. A translator won’t cost you an arm and a leg for a few hours and is probably well worth it, even if it to just translate the menu for you. Some restaurants will have a menu also in English, or a seperate English menu but many will not. If they have younger staff most will speak and understand English surprisingly well, but often not specifics such as particular food items. After your first meeting and assuming you get a second date you may well not need a translator again, but for your first meeting it is well worth the small extra cost.

Don’t worry that a translator being present will cramp your style or make you feel awkward… Sure it can be a little strange to pour your heart out, or tell your date how beautiful she looks through a third person, but they are there to translate and have done it many times before. It is a job for them, and they like to do it well. You will soon feel at ease.  You will be expected to pay for your translator’s meal too, but as they are there to work, they only order something very light, and only one drink,  and with the exchange rate will cost you next to nothing anyway.

Your translator will be very thoughful too, helping you all the way and advising where the toilets are and which is which if there is not an obvious picture on the door to distinguish the ladies from the gents. Russian or Ukrainian is not easy to read.

It can be a little strange talking through a translator…who do you look at when speaking? and remembering the translator will probably be younger than your lady, but unless it is her first assignment she will put you at ease right away with her professional approach and caring. You will soon feel completly at ease. Depending on your date’s English comprehension you may soon be bypassing her and she will only be stepping in when and where needed to translate the more trickier or uncomon words or phrases. Remember too that while their English will be pretty good, they too are not perfect and sometimes won’t fully understand, but they will work with you to get it right rather than misrepresent what you were actually were trying to say, or if its clear you are confused about something. But please remember sometimes between languages they may still get it wrong. This is where it is better being face to face and you date can see your facial expressions to help understand.

As with any first date, don’t talk about the usual no-no’s. It is dating 101 just like at home. Avoid politics, religion and sex and most of all never mention your ex unless asked.

Complement her on her looks, what she is wearing or both. She will have spent at least 2 hours getting ready for this first date. And don’t forget to give her a nice flower, hopefully her favourite, or some small gift.

More next week…
